Whilst all the talk over here in the UK is about the possibility that the country may be on the verge of a recession, it seems that one industry that has already reached that economical nadir is the adult industry, if you're to believe this news story.
Everyone knows that the DVD industry is, not to put to fine a point on it, fucked, but I'm not at all sure that this recession extends to the ENTIRE industry. Any company worth its salt wouldn't dare try and run a DVD business without backing it up with a significant internet presence anyway, and that is where most porn business is done.
Plus, those DVDs are what these companies are selling online on their sites anyway. Surely it will just be a fact that the emphasis in the industry will shift from DVD sales to online downloads? Really, the profits are just shifting from one place to another.
That, you would imagine, will be great news for the likes of PPV sites such as Hot Movies and indeed flat-rate subscription sites such as Video Box. These sites are FAR better value for money than any DVDs you can normally buy at your local adult shops or online stores anyway, so why anyone is suprised that the bottom is dropping out of the single DVD purchase market?
The adult industry has to face facts - DVDs were ridiculously highly priced anyway compared to the mainstream movie industry, so really they've made a rod for their own back. They've only got themselves to blame as a result and now they are paying the penalty as a result - just not as big a penalty as reports such as these may suggest.
